The Counsel provides proactive, business-oriented legal support to the Pet Nutrition, Royal Canin and Mars Wrigley businesses in Mexico.
The Counsel independently manages legal matters assigned to them by the Sr Counsels in charge of the Mars Petcare and Mars Wrigley Business, delivering practical, timely, and strategic advice to internal stakeholders.
The role covers a broad range of legal areas, including commercial contracts, compliance, corporate governance, employment, marketing, and regulatory matters, with the aim of managing legal risks, protecting Mars’ freedom to operate, and enabling business growth. The Counsel operates as part of the Mexico legal team, working closely with the Senior Counsels (T3) and other members of the Mars Legal function in the Americas.
The role requires strong interpersonal skills to build trust with business leaders, the ability to work independently on assigned matters, and the agility to handle a diverse workload in a fast-paced environment.
The Counsel will interact with internal clients at all levels, external counsel, and regulatory authorities as needed.
Splitting their time between QRO and MEX the Counsel will travel 20% of their time.
What are we looking for?
Law degree from an accredited university in Mexico.
Licensed to practice law in Mexico.
3–6 years of post-qualification legal experience in Mexico, with at least 2 years as in-house counsel (preferably in FMCG, retail, or similar industries).
Broad-based legal experience, including commercial contracts, compliance, corporate governance, employment law, and litigation management.
Experience advising senior business leaders and managing external counsel.
Strong understanding of Mexican commercial, corporate, and regulatory law.
What will be your key responsibilities?
Day-to-Day Legal Support:Acting as a broad generalist, the Counsel manages and resolves legal matters independently within scope assigned by the Senior Counsels, including:
Marketing & Communications: Reviews and approves marketing, advertising, promotional materials, and corporate communications ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
Sales: Supports the negotiation of sales agreements with distributors and retailers and advises the sales teams through the management of the customer relationship.
Procurement: drafts and negotiates procurement agreements e.g. for raw material or packaging.
Employment & Labor Law: Provides advice on employment-related matters, including contracts, policies, and dispute resolution.
Data Privacy: ensures compliance of the business unit activity with Mexican privacy and data protection laws as well as with Mars Standards and policies.
Ethics and Compliance: Supports the implementation of the local compliance program in line with global Mars standards, including training, monitoring, and reporting activities.
Corporate Governance: Ensures compliance with corporate secretarial obligations, company policies, and governance standards.
Provider management:At the direction of the Senior counsel, coordinates the work of the department’s contractors and external counsels to deliver timely and qualitative support to the business.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., Corporate Affairs, Finance, P&O, Marketing, Sales, Supply) to provide integrated legal support aligned with business priorities.
As a direct report of local leadership team member, participates in the various leadership forums of their level.Partners with other members of the legal function at Mars in Latin America and globally to ensure consistency of approach and community of practice.
